Many people notice a little blood when brushing or flossing and ignore it. In most cases it is a sign of gingivitis — inflammation caused by plaque along the gum line.
Common causes
- Plaque and tartar build-up
- Brushing too hard or with a hard-bristled brush
- Hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy
- Some medicines and vitamin deficiencies
Why it matters
Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the bone supporting the teeth is lost. This is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults.
What you can do
Brush twice a day with a soft brush, clean between your teeth daily, and book a professional cleaning. If bleeding continues for more than two weeks, see your dentist for a gum assessment.
